No, I'm all right. ETA 4 minutes.

she's just a bit stiff. the pain itself is easy to ignore. apologies to her soulmate who is probably somewhere brooding over it, oop.

when she comes through the door, she bends to unhook the tripwire, coiling it into a loop that she then hangs carefully on the wall.

she looks more-or-less okay, if somewhat tired, dark smudges beneath her eyes despite the few hours of sleep she'd caught in d's soul room. she undoes the clasp on her winter coat, drapes it over the back of the nearest chair and takes off her shoes. the way she does it, stiff and guarded on one side, indicates that the injury is likely to her left thigh.

I don't want to be out in that weather any more than I have to be!

still, she sounds cheerful even as she's gathering up the supplies fukawa brought out of the bathroom. given the way the claw marks curve around the back of her leg, there's not really any easy or comfortable way to sit so she can easily access the entire length of the laceration, so for ease of cleaning she just spreads a towel out on the floor and drops down on it, beginning the process of peeling off the quick bandage and dressing she'd applied hours earlier, carefully tucked so as not to wick the blood away. as she works —

Thank you for coming on short notice. I appreciate it.

that gets a bit of a laugh, and a shake of her head.

I told you, just sparring. With someone named Grimmjow. I told him not to hold back, and he didn't.

the dressing is peeled away, revealing a series of clawmarks that scored her skin, definitely down through layers of muscle and fat, nearly to the bone. it looks... messy, but the marks are at least far enough apart that there's enough stability to stitch it all up.

she shakes her head faintly, reaching for that hot water to tug it closer. she begins the process of cleaning out the wound, pinkish blood sluicing from the lacerations to the towel.

No, but he does have claws. I don't quite know what he is, truth be told.

powerful, though. but while she accepts that she lost that fight, she doesn't feel so outmatches as to be afraid of facing him again. she'd broken through what he called hierro, after all.

Trust me, he didn't walk away without injuries either. This is nothing.

she's been stabbed through the midriff before. her leg's a long way away from her heart.

I can heal it, but I'm pretty low on chakra right now. I'd rather not waste what I've got on something that isn't lethal. Stitching it up is fine for now, and in a few days I'll heal it properly. .

Oh, healing isn't my deus ex machina. At least, not like that.

if she wanted to release the seal... she could heal herself instantly. but an injury like this isn't going to impact her much even if it's stitched closed. she'd really only use it if she were in danger of dying.

Bring it over here. I'll use it to sterilize the wound and draw out any contaminants.

she's not going to pour it directly on the wound!! gosh. sakura waves a hand over the water, gathering some of it up into a bubble of chakra. she might not have enough for healing outright, but certainly enough for this. it's the same technique she'd used when she pulled poison out of kankurō, slightly modified for her current use of decontamination. the water doesn't quite touch her with the thin insulation of cooling chakra between it and her, but it's enough to gather up the detritus matted into the wound, dirt and slivers of wood and other grime. the water dirties over time, darkening to a murky grey. when she's satisfied, it gets dumped out into another small dish, and she exhales through her teeth — the only sign that it might have not been quite so painless as her poise suggests.

I'll probably need your help stitching where it's harder for me to reach — see how it goes around the back of the thigh? Just mind how I do it.

Haven't you heard? Cool scars are all the rage.

so, it's okay. if the stitches are crooked, or it's not perfect somehow. sakura didn't ask her because she thought she'd be the best possible person for it, she asked her because she's a friend and she trusts her.

So, it's okay. said as she rummages for supplies, sterile sutures and a wickedly curved needle. her tone is conversant. distracting, maybe. the way she talks to her patients when they're the ones beneath her hands, but there's no reason the easy nonchalance won't help to steady fukawa's nerves as well. I have one on my stomach that's way worse. Did you notice it at the hotspring?

where madara ran her through, ugly entrance and exit wounds just left of her spine. another instance of being too low on chakra to heal it fully, she'd needed to put every ounce she had into obito to save sasuke. she doesn't regret it, either. what's life without a few scars?

poor fukawa, sakura's just traumatizing her all over the place

No, I was stabbed.

she might as well be talking about the weather, tbh. her voice maintains that soft, storyteller's cadence as she continues —

Here, focus on your breathing and the sound of my voice. Keep your eyes closed for a bit, I'll handle the first part.

the needle is threaded, and she wipes down the wound with a fast-acting analgesic, something from aspen's stores. she knows from experience it won't take too long to set in, and while she waits she tacks the edges of the wound together with temporary fixtures just so it's easier to stitch everything back up. if she had the chakra to spare to deaden the nerves, she would — she's tough, but not a masochist by any means.

a few exploratory jabs along the faultline of the laceration proves the pain relief is mostly working, and then she starts. the pop of the needle through flesh has a remarkable similarity to the sound of pulling grass up by the roots.

her sutures are incredibly neat and her hand is steady as she works, though every once in a while she'll stop and steady herself, blood caked into the leylines of her palm and fingertips, trembling on the ghost of her exhalation before she continues.

We were at war. Our enemy was someone we didn't think we would be able to stop. He was incredibly powerful, and wasn't able to die in the customary fashion. I was so eager to show off the fact I'd improved as a shinobi I pretty much jumped on his sword. It was stupid of me. I'm lucky I survived it, actually.

haha, remember that time i almost died? sick story, bro.

look she's going thru some things!!

The one I mentioned. This was several years ago for me now.

it's said breezily, though she does make a soft sound of annoyance when she pulls the stitch taut and begins threading the next suture through.

And he was... ah... hm. He was already dead. We were fighting his impure reincarnation. So, no matter how injured he was, he could regenerate.

the lid was definitely off the limit of reality. madara still gives her nightmares. sometimes, he looks like sasuke.

Yep. Like I've said, I'm pretty resilient.

sakura, meanwhile, offended

her hand stills, and the needle with it as she wrinkles her nose up. young? certainly. but the right of passage to adulthood was passing the chuunin exam, and she did that when she was fourteen.

I wasn't a child in the way you're suggesting. Young, yes — but our culture doesn't really work like that.

constant war tends to age people before their time. she doesn't know many shinobi who've survived into their forties, after all.

And it wasn't only luck, either. she resumes her work, teeth catching at one corner of her lip as she does. It was also hard work, being in the right place at the right time, and the sacrifice of thousands of members of the allied army.
