Characters in game: N/A
♰ BASICS
Character's name: Toko Fukawa/Genocider Syo
Canon: Danganronpa
Canon point: End of DR3 anime
Age: 19
Background: Fan Wiki, uses localized names and so refers to Fukawa as Toko and Genocider Syo as Genocide Jack/Jill. Refer to DRAE/DR3 images for current visuals.
Abilities: No magic, just anime nonsense and wildly unrealistic portrayals of Dissociative Identity Disorder. I'll be providing an opt-out post due to the latter, and can understand if you feel it makes her an inappropriate character to have in the game. Please alert me if this is an issue, I'm open to discussion, further nerfing, and/or applying later with a different character.
FUKAWA - Literary prodigy, no other skills. A desolate vacuum of skills, if you will.
- Does not share her alter's physical prowess. It's not explained why, likely a psychosomatic block.
SYO - (formerly) murderous split personality, activated by fainting, sneezing, or jolted with a taser. Reverts to Fukawa under the same means. They share emotions and basic knowledge, but not memories.
- Lethally adept with scissors in combat, usually threaded over her knuckles. Can also throw them with very high accuracy
- Agility/strength/flexibility/speed of a seasoned martial artist
- Due to the over-the-top nature of the series she can appear superhuman, ie: leaping several meters in the air, lifting people one-handed, destroying giant robots with scissors. I'm treating that as part of the stylization and nerfing her to a very gifted melee-combat murderess.
♰ SUITABILITY
Strengths:
FUKAWA - Principled. By the series' end Fukawa is no saint, but she doesn't tolerate cowardice, cruelty, or self-deception. She calls other people out on their hypocrisies, urges them to stand up for themselves, and decries their moral failings. Sometimes this forces her to go against her nature, but she'll begrudgingly push through for a better chance of survival, whether her own or that of others. She doesn't want to return to the bitter victim she used to be.
- Loyalty. Fukawa had an abusive homelife and was terribly bullied, but once she finds someone she cares for, she will devote herself utterly to them. Formerly too selfish to consider it, she has now repeatedly risked her life and happiness for others' sakes, chiefly her crush Togami and best friend Komaru.
- Intelligence. Fukawa is well read and a genius writer. While not always an applicable talent (sometimes used as pure escapism), she can assess situations and people from a removed perspective, sometimes intuiting their true natures before others do.
SYO - Fearlessness. Syo gives no fucks, partly because she's sociopathic and partly because she's usually the biggest baddie in the room. She may internally register the a threat but outwardly maintains a kooky joie de vivre.
- Optimism. In spite of being a sadist, Syo is the glass-half-full side of the coin. She's here for a good time and can spot the opening for it in most situations.
- Loyalty. Once, Syo rarely felt true attachment to people outside of murderous lust. Because she shares emotions with Fukawa, she now covets both Togami and Komaru. She would kill or die for them in equal measure, and is abstaining from wrong-doing for their sake.
Weaknesses:
FUKAWA - Paranoid. Fukawa is suspicious of everyone and everything. She preemptively insults people and avoids connection, believing they're speaking to her as a cruel prank or out of pity. She also perceives deadly threats where there are none.
- Jealous. She has many intense insecurities, but especially regarding her looks. She bullies beautiful girls, accuses everyone of thinking she's hideous, and often denies that Komaru is quite pretty. Having been treated as a pariah her whole life, it's difficult for her to shake this impression.
- Obsessive. When she falls for a man, she falls hard, fast, and dangerously. She's willfully obtuse of Togami's faults and embraces his hatred of her, refusing to be deterred. She stalks him, accepts his insults, obeys his orders, and is convinced they're destined to be married. He doesn't want any of this.
- Masochistic. As seen above, she has terrible self-esteem and more readily believes the negative than the positive. Ergo, she welcomes terrible treatment from anyone she's fallen "in love" with. More than once Togami has put her in harm's way and she thanks him for it. This also bleeds into her romantic/sexual fantasies.
SYO
- Callous. Syo can and will cut anyone who riles her up. Unless you've endeared yourself to Fukawa or she thinks you're a total babe, she doesn't show one lick of compassion. Life and death are casual matters in her eyes, and it's only because of Togami's orders and Komaru's friendship that she's reforming as a protector instead of a threat.
- Sadistic. Syo used to murder the boys Fukawa fancied out of a perverse thrill. She enjoys the act of killing and is elitist about how it gets done. Even now she misses it, unable to help fantasizing or threatening violence on a whim.
- Erratic. Syo is a creature of pure id and only selectively cares about consequences. She'll rush headfirst into a dangerous situation with no regard for safety, once even triggering a bomb in her haste. She's easily distracted and follows whims over plans or logic, but can sometimes be reasoned with. She does keep her head down when she recognizes an overarching threat, such as the promise of execution should she murder someone in Hope's Peak, or the loss of Togami or Komaru.
Fears:
FUKAWA - Phobias. She fears the dark, blood (used to faint at the sight of it), possibly water/bathing, and ghosts. The first can be attributed to childhood abuses, having been locked in closets for days and otherwise neglected, but blood is all thanks to Syo. Fukawa would wake up unawares at Syo's crime scenes and became intensely traumatized. She might avoid bathing either because her parents were cruel about it, for a sort of self-flagellation, or because waking up clean meant Syo had to wash fresh blood away. She panics upon encountering her fears, openly shivering or screaming, but nowadays will endure them in deliberate self-improvement. They still rattle her deeply though. Ghosts are a recent addition, and now she sleeps in Komaru's bed to feel safe at night.
- Loneliness. Fukawa's chief problem has always been her lack of connection. She'd given up on befriending people, accepting that she was born to be hated. This fear still stymies her progress, but at the same time she'll fight tooth and nail to keep any chance of happiness she's got. She was once willing to throw the world away to save Togami's skin, and then nearly gave up on saving him to keep Komaru safe.
SYO - While dimly aware that dying is not ideal, Syo remains cavalier to the core. Her one fear is losing Togami, Komaru, and to a lesser extent her fellow Hope's Peak survivors. She has also grown somewhat protective of Fukawa herself. These hesitations are abstract, occasionally verbalized, and obscured by her belligerent antics, but are often the motivators behind her aggression.
Desires:
FUKAWA - To be loved.
- To be respected.
- To never be alone again.
- To be beautiful.
- To live happily with Togami and Komaru.
- For the world to STOP BEING ON FIRE, GODDAMN
SYO - To be with Togami
- Keep Komaru alive
- To be free to do as she pleases
Regrets:
FUKAWA - the murders. Syo has killed 37 people, and Fukawa never wanted to hurt anyone. She had crushed on all of them, and yet unwittingly became their demise.
- Her cowardice. It dogs her even now, but it used to rule her every move. It caused both her and her peers absolute misery, particularly in the Hope's Peak killing game.
- Her selfishness. She agreed to meet with and escort Komaru through enemy territory in exchange for Togami's safety. Once she'd befriended her and this plot is revealed, she tries to force Komaru to escape alone, tormented by her own actions and even enlisting Syo to help.
SYO - Syo regrets nothing, especially not killing people. She feels echoes of Fukawa's failings though: despite having no context about her hostage swap deal, she immediately plays along to get Komaru out of harm's way, and when that fails she nearly murders the henchmen executing the deal. Only Komaru's intervention stops her.
Tethers: Both girls would share:
- Byakuya Togami: their strongest infatuation
- Komaru Naegi: their first true friend
- So Lingers the Ocean original manuscript: Fukawa's best work to date.
- A pair of scissors: Replica of the ones Syo committed her first murder with
- Original poem: written for Makoto Naegi during their entrapment in Hope's Peak.
